Grade 9-12 Thinking Skills Objectives

Learner Goals


Because thinking skills are integral to all aspects of learning, it is the committee's belief that these goals span the grade 9-12 curriculum.

THIK.01 The student shall recognize that thinking precedes all other language arts activities.
THIK.02 The student shall recognize personal patterns of organization and thought.
THIK.03 The student shall analyze the elements that compose a work of literature.
THIK.04 The student shall develop a tolerance for cultural diversity through the interpretation of literature.
THIK.05 The student shall produce a synthesized project after reading a work of literature.
THIK.06 The student shall evaluate how a piece of literature related to the world.
THIK.07 The student shall reach a deeper understanding of self and others through empathetic reading of literature.
THIK.08 The student shall distinguish between fantasy and reality.
THIK.09 The student shall critique various forms of literature.
THIK.10 The student shall respond to and evaluate intentions and messages of speakers, writers, presenters, and media.
THIK.11 The student shall differentiate between fact and opinion.
THIK.12 The student shall recognise logical/illogical sequences.
THIK.13 The student shall create an hypothesis and predict outcomes.
THIK.14 The student shall expand creativity, inventiveness, and logical/critical thinking.
THIK.15 The student shall evaluate the validity of assertions.
THIK.16 The student shall detect fallacies in reasoning and emotional appeals.
THIK.17 The student shall distinguish between objective and subjective viewpoints.
THIK.18 The student shall listen with eyes as well as ears by perceiving verbal and nonverbal clues.
THIK.19 The student shall identify the purposes for which a piece of literature is intended.
THIK.20 The student shall identify the intended audience.
THIK.21 The student shall recognise nuances of meaning in similar words, situations, and nonverbal clues.
THIK.22 The student shall enjoy the aesthetic and intellectual benefits of thinking.
THIK.23 The student shall defend a position by using evidence, reasoning, and logic.
THIK.24 The student shall respond to and evaluate self as a speaker, a writer, and a presenter.
THIK.25 The student shall make frequent use of computers for writing.
