Grade 7-10 Montana History


GR7-10MT.01 Montana Geography
1.1 The student will identify the mountain, rivers, and the physical characteristics of teh state.
1.2 The student will be able to locate the major cities and the counties of Montana.
GR7-10MT.02 Lewis and Clark Expedition and early exploration
2.1 The student will be able to name the motives for the expedition.
2.2 The student will be able to trace the expedition through Montana. 
2.3 The student will know major events and accomplishments of the expedition.
2.4 The student will name other early explorers and analyze their impact.
2.5 The student will know the importance of missionaries and missions (e.g. Father DeSmet).
GR7-10MT.03 Fur Trade
3.1 The student will identify the motives and incentives for the fur trade.
3.2 The student will know the three phases and the major participants of their respective phases.
3.3 The student will understand the impact of the fur trade upon the development of Montana.
GR7-10MT.04 Mining
4.1 The student will know the locations of the major gold strikes in Montana.
4.2 The student will understand the effects of gold discovery in Montana upon settlement, transportation, Native Americans, and lawlessness.
4.3 The student will identify the major players in the "War of the Copper Kings" and know about the interaction between the participants.
4.4 The student will recognize the contribution of mining to the development of the state and its subsequent, inherent problems.
GR7-10MT.05 Native Americans
5.1 The student will know the indigenous tribes of Montana and their location in the state. 
5.2 The student will learn the various cultures of the tribes and their development.
5.3 The student will analyze the causes of the Indian/white wars.
5.4 The student will identify the major events, personalities, and locations of the Indian Wars.
GR7-10MT.06 Transportation
6.1 The student will trace the development of transportation  in Montana in the following: steamboats, railroads, trails, highways, airlines, and identify their importance to settlements.
GR7-10MT.07 Cattle Industry
7.1 The student will trace the development of the cattle industry from "open range" days to the modern beef industry.
7.2 The student will identify the role of the major participants and their development.
7.3 The student will know the conflict between cattle and sheep ranchers.
7.4 The student will be acquainted with other livestock (e.g. horses).
