Program Description
United States History and the North Central Montana Eighth grade students are literally a world apart. The program is designed to increase the students awareness of where we came from and where we are going. It needs to be made relevant to this existence and it needs to provide the student with a basis not only to understanding the past but also to give them a basis from which to make objective decisions concerning their rights and responsibilities as citizens of Montana and the Unites States of America.
| GR678USH.01 | The student will identify events that occurred in European history that led to the exploration and discovery eras. |
| GR678USH.02 | The student will identify the three major European countries who colonized the Americas and locate on maps the areas their countries concentrated on. |
| GR678USH.03 | The student will assimilate the struggle involved in beginning and
establishing permanent colonies. Descriptive Statement: This will include explaining the personal human sacrifice required to accomplish this and understanding the determination of a people who wanted to improve their personal or group position in life. |
| GR678USH.04 | The student will recognize cause-effect relationships of events that led to the development of the fundamental issues of the Declaration of Independence and the War for Independence. |
| GR678USH.05 | The student will analyze the short-comings of the Articles of Confederation as a government that could not deal with national considerations. |
| GR678USH.06 | The student will identify the important ideals expressed in the Declaration
of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Descriptive Statement: Emphasis will be on understanding how the documents have withstood the tests of time and the basic rights of citizenship. |
| GR678USH.07 | The student will describe the basic requirements and responsibilities
of the three branches of the federal government. Descriptive Statement: Emphasis will be on recognizing the powers of each branch and realizing the importance of the system of checks and balances including the role of political parties. |
| GR678USH.08 | The student will describe the philosophy of the Manifest Destiny as a
rational for U.S. expansion from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Descriptive Statement: Emphasis will be placed on immigration, the Westward movement, and the changing relationships with the Native Americans. |
| GR678USH.09 | The student will identify the causes of the Civil War. Descriptive Statement: Emphasis will be placed on understanding economical, political, and ethical issues that started conflict. |
| GR678USH.10 | The student will be made aware of religious, social, and political reforms
that arose as a result of expansion and industrialization. Descriptive Statement: Emphasis will be made on an understanding of how the size of big business, heavy industry, and mechanized farming resulted in the economic transformation of American life. |
| GR678USH.11 | The student will become aware of U.S. advancement into international
involvement and recognize the role of the U.S. as a World Power. Descriptive Statement: Emphasis will be on our victory over Spain in the Spanish-American War, our involvement in the World Wars, Korea, and the tension created in the Cold War era. |
| GR678USH.12 | The student will describe the effects of post war economics, social reform,
advancement of minority groups, and other domestic issues as caused by U.S.
involvement in world affairs. Descriptive Statement: Emphasis will be placed on the interdependency of world society's needs for human and physical resources as they advanced into the 20th century and as they prepare for the future. |
