GTCC Tobacco Use Prevention
Life Skills®

Through the Life Skills® curriculum a combination of personal self-management skill and social skills are taught to increase personal competence and decrease vulnerability and motivation to use drugs.  In addition Life Skills® provides specific knowledge and skills related to the problem of drug abuse.  The curriculum impacts on social risk factors such as media influences and peer pressure, as well as personal risk factors such as anxiety and low self-esteem.  The program we are training on is designed to begin in the 6th or 7th grade with booster sessions in subsequent grades.

Life Skills® curriculum suggests 10 core lessons and 2 booster lessons, 40-50 minutes each.  The ten core lessons are designed to occur over a two-week period; booster lesson plans are developed to be taught one year after the core lessons. Activities encourage student involvement and participation. Activities  include games, videos, role-playing and small group discussions, using student worksheets, home-work assignments, advocate letter writing and video-taping projects.  An implementation manual provides step-by-step instructions for completing each of the ten core lessons and two booster lesson.

Life Skills® answers the need for middle school-aged substance abuse education in an effective and affordable way.  The Office of Public Instruction is using funds from the Montana Tobacco Settlement to provide the training materials for all participants.  The materials include:
